Description

The gastrointestinal microbiome plays a key role in critical illness. Numerous drugs such as antimicrobials and anti-acid medication, as well as GI surgery and malnutrition can disrupt the microbiome and metabolome. This has been associated with an increased risk of sepsis, multiple organ failure, and death. This session will highlight the relationship between microbiome, metabolome and the current knowledge between drugs and alteration of the microbiome. It will also discuss the possible therapeutic avenues to limit dysbiosis and the evidence (or lack thereof) to improve outcomes.
