Antimicrobials are some of the most prescribed medications in human and veterinary medicine. They have allowed significant advances in human and veterinary medicine during the 20th century.  Those advances are now threatened by the rise of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when microorganisms evolve mechanisms to resist the effects of antimicrobials, making infections more difficult to treat. In 2014, the World Health Organization called antimicrobial resistance a major global health threat. This presentation will review the physiology of bacteria, to better understand the various mechanisms of action by which the antimicrobial classes kill or inhibit bacteria. We will describe the main 3 mechanisms by which bacteria can escape the effects of antimicrobial and how those traits are disseminated. Lastly, we will briefly discuss strategies to limit the spread of AMR in small animal veterinary medicine.
